Teachers and Families Celebrate Young Artists

Almost 250 people filled the Blue Ball Barn on April 24 to mark the launch of Pacem in Terris’ 2024–25 Traveling Peace Youth Art Exhibitions, which will present visions of peace by 79 young artists in 23 different venues across Delaware.

Forty of the young artists—ranging from elementary to high-school students—attended with family members and friends. They were joined by 13 school art teachers or principals whose students’ work was selected by a jury from more than 650 examples exhibited at the Wilmington Public Library in January.

The crowd was treated to a pop-up show of 75 framed works and a welcoming video by Tracey Quillen Carney, honorary co-chair of Traveling Peace. Ms. Carney’s co-chair is Tina Betz, Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Wilmington.

In January, more than 650 visions of peace were on display at the Wilmington Library from 30 schools and community groups statewide. About 500 people attended the opening, including 100 young artists and their families.

Jurors selected the strongest messages of peace, and high quality digital reproductions were made and framed along with the artist’s statements. Five different collections of 13 to 16 works then travel to prominent locations throughout the state, including Nemours Children’s Hospital, The Grand, Legislative Hall, State of Delaware Courthouses and State Service Centers.

Where and when can I see a Traveling Peace exhibit?

Schedule is subject to change. Not all locations are open to the general public.

Sponsorship Campaign Surpasses $11,000

This is the eighth year of Pacem’s Visionary Peace Youth Art program—and the first year of a new sponsorship campaign to underwrite the considerable cost in materials, services, and staff time.

The Arts for Peace program is one of Pacem’s most beloved and highly visible community initiatives. From foot traffic statistics, it is estimated that more than 100,000 people will encounter one or more of these exhibits in a given year. Sponsors’ names and logos are prominently displayed alongside every collection.

To date, the sponsorship campaign

has netted 11 sponsors contributing at levels ranging from $250 to $5,000—each named for an artistic style, such as “Surrealist” and “Impressionist.” As of May 15, sponsors donated more than $11,500 toward an annual goal of $40,000. This program continues because of our generous sponsors and longtime supporters.

There is no charge for schools or community groups to participate in

Visionary Youth Peace Art. Pacem staff and volunteers shepherd every aspect of this program—from the call for entries and working with art teachers in the fall, to preparing hundreds of works for the January opening, to the selection, framing, moving, and hanging of the Traveling Peace exhibits during the following year.

The program has been partially funded by the Laffey McHugh Foundation and supported by the Delaware Division of the Arts—”thank you!”—but their support falls short of the true cost of each year’s Visionary Youth Peace Art program.

Sponsorships from businesses and individuals are vital to filling this gap. To receive a sponsorship brochure or ask a question, call (302) 656-2721.
